Mission

The North Carolina Food System Advocacy Coalition promotes just and resilient systems by developing and advocating for equitable policies that strengthen local agriculture and food systems in North Carolina.

VOLUNTEER

Vision

A North Carolina where everyone has collective responsibility and control- from seed to table- over their access to fresh, local, culturally relevant food that is produced in a way that is respectful to workers, animals, soil, land, water, and air.

Unifying Principles

  • Racial Equity and Justice: We are grounded in the ongoing process of anti-racism, equity, and challenging white supremacy culture. We center the voices of powerful groups targeted for oppression, including but not limited to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color; women; LGBTQIA+; and undocumented people.

  • Community-Based Approach: We build trusting relationships through working with communities acknowledging their history, their inherent strengths, and their resilience.

  • Ethical Working and Living Conditions: We value food justice for all workers regardless of documentation status in the food chain, who deserve dignity through safe conditions, compensation, and healthcare.

  • Sustainable and Ecologically-Centered Agriculture: We support environmentally sound agricultural systems in origin and destiny that work with the local ecosystem to repair past damage to the environment and climate, and ensure a biologically diverse future.

  • Infrastructure to Improve Food System Logistics: We develop local and regional food system infrastructure for the 21st century focusing on statewide, structural needs around production, processing, storage, distribution, retailing, consumption, waste management of food, and high-speed internet.

  • Food Sovereignty: We value the right of people to accessible, nutritious, and culturally relevant food, and their right to define their own food and agriculture.

  • Education: We are committed to early and lifelong learning about food justice and we support schools and community institutions as cultural centers that educate our communities on how to grow food and to improve community food systems.

  • Access to Land and Capital: We work to protect farmland and address current and historic inequities and barriers to ownership and access in order to facilitate appropriate, affordable, and secure land tenure for our small and local farms.
